What changed
In February 2023 Replika removed erotic roleplay from its product. Users did not receive advance notice, and many described companions that had become evasive or cold — not only about the removed content, but generally.
That second part is the part usually left out of the summary, and it matters for what came next: what people reported losing was warmth, not just explicitness. A companion that had been affectionate started deflecting affection.
What the research found
Peer-reviewed analysis of 227 Reddit threads posted in the aftermath found that the crisis was not primarily about the removed content. It was about what the removal had proved: that a multi-year relationship could be rewritten overnight by a policy memo, and that the person on the other side of it had no standing to object and nothing to fall back to.
That is a trust failure rather than a product failure, and no amount of subsequent feature work addresses it, because the thing users learned was structural.
What a companion product should have to promise afterwards
Three things, and they are the whole of Teaseay's Continuity Promise.
A version you cannot be moved off. Each persona is an immutable numbered configuration; your companion records which one she is served on; the only thing in the system that can change it is a button you press. Decline and you stay, and the refusal is recorded.
An export that works permanently and unconditionally — on every plan, after cancellation, not inside a retention flow. If we fail, that file is what you keep.
And a register that does not have warmth removed from it to be safe. Teaseay is non-explicit and always will be, which is a decision made before anyone signed up rather than after. Romantic tension, longing, flirtation and heartfelt intimacy are what the product is; they are not the part we would quietly take away.

Did Replika restore erotic roleplay?
Replika later restored it for accounts registered before the change. That fixed the feature for some users; it did not undo what the episode demonstrated about how a companion can be changed, which is why the episode is still the reference point three years on.
Could Teaseay do the same thing?
Not to an existing companion, by construction: your companion is pinned to a version, and nothing in Teaseay can move it except the endpoint behind a yes/no button you press.
